price Dog & Bone Backbone for iPhone 6 Case Review
The Backbone is a rugged iPhone case that features a true wireless charging system based on the Qi industry standard. The wireless charging module can be easily replaced with an extra battery (sold separately) for additional power when you are out and about.

Size and Fit
The Backbone installs easily thanks to its flexible construction. There is, however, one very important thing to remember when installing or removing the case: Always remove the wireless charging module or battery pack before installation/removal. Both of these connect to your phone through the Lightning Port, and attempting removal or installation while they are in place could result in damage to the case (and possibly your phone). The Backbone adds 5.3mm to the thickness of your phone, taking it from 6.9mm to 12.2mm (just under inch) and about 1/2" to its length. As with all battery and wireless charging cases, this additional length is to accommodate the lightning connector that must be in place for them to work.

Features and Quality
While there are a number of ways to wirelessly charge an electronic device, Dog & Bone has chosen to conform to the Qi (pronounced "chee") industry standard for inductive charging (the use of electromagnetic fields) for energy transfer. If you have an electric toothbrush in your house that charges simply by setting it in its stand, you have seen this technology in action. This Qi wireless charging system establishes a connection whenever a compatible device is placed on a charging station and determines its energy requirements. This is important because there are Qi Wireless Charging Stations scattered about most large metropolitan areas, and there are a great number of compatible devices out there; all with different power needs. Once fully charged, this information is communicated to the base unit, and it switches to standby mode. Unlike most wired chargers, a Qi charger transfers energy at a full 5w for the fastest possible safe charge. lastly, the electromagnetic coils are fully shielded against unwanted EM radiation leakage.
Since the base unit generates the electricity, it contains the large and relatively heavy electromagnetic coils, leaving the Backbone case quite trim and light. The Backbone's inductive receiver is easily removed for case removal or replacement with a Backbone Battery (sold separately). The capacity of this battery is 1500mAh, which doesn't quite match the capacity of the iPhone 6. However, it's easily enough to give you another several hours of dedicated use, and quite a bit more in standby mode. This battery is small enough to easily slip into a purse/backpack or even a tight pocket, making it ideal for those with hungry power needs and not a lot of storage space.

While wireless charging is certainly the standout feature of the Backbone Case, It's surprisingly rugged as well. As with most battery or wireless charging cases, it doesn't try to protect your phone from moisture, but, unlike most of the competition, it does offer a durability rating of MIL STD 810F, which means that in tests, it repeatedly withstood 4-foot drops onto plywood-covered concrete without sustaining any damage (case or phone). Considering the fact that using your phone nearly always means holding it in your hand, it would be safe to say that there are two kinds of cell phones; those that have been dropped, and those that will be dropped. When your time comes, best to be prepared. Charging your phone is as simple as placing it face-up on the included charging mat (or any Qi compatible charge mat). There are no pins or electrodes to line up, and, of course nothing to plug-in. This isn't to say that you can't plug it in thanks to the mini-USB port on the base of the case. Wireless charging may seem to some like a luxury you don't need, but I can't overstate the fact that once you get used to it, you will lose your patience for charge cables, and never want to give it up. Additionally, it's a fairly satisfying feeling plopping your phone down on a Qi charger at the airport while watching one's fellow travelers vie for outlets to charge their phones.
Style
The Backbone case comes in black with a cool tire tread pattern on the back. A pleasing accent color outlines the charge/battery module slot, and is available in four colors (orange, pink, blue, and red).

Summary
The Backbone Case for the iPhone 6 is a high-quality rugged Qi compatible charge case. While priced at the high end, when you consider the build quality, ruggedness, style, and the ability to swap out the charge module for a backup battery; you will likely come to the conclusion that the Backbone is priced just about right.
